Buena Park was established in 1887 when James A. Whitaker, a Chicago wholesale grocer, purchased 690 acres from Abel Stearns and developed the land into an agricultural settlement. The city's name likely derives from Spanish—either referencing a Chicago suburb of the same name or the local term 'Plaza Buena' (good park), which originally referred to an artesian well and its surrounding grounds. For much of its early history, Buena Park remained a rural agricultural area producing dairy, wine, and citrus products. The city was officially incorporated on January 27, 1953, as development began transforming it from farmland into a suburban and commercial center.

Today Buena Park is home to over 84,000 residents representing one of California's most diverse communities: 40.9% identify as Hispanic or Latino, 33.2% as Asian, 25.9% as White, with 13.5% identifying as multiracial and smaller populations of Black residents and others. The median household income is approximately $108,187, and the median age is 37.9 years, reflecting a mix of young professionals, families building roots, and established residents. While the agricultural heritage has largely given way to residential neighborhoods and commercial districts, Knott's Berry Farm—which traces directly back to that early 20th-century berry-farming era—remains the city's most prominent landmark and largest employer.

Buena Park's transformation from small agricultural settlement to diverse urban center reflects what American families do: they build communities, start businesses, raise children, and invest in the future. That progress depends on each household being able to answer a simple question about the people who depend on them. Life insurance provides the answer by guaranteeing a specific sum to those people if an income disappears.
